A team-building day they'll actually remember.
Most corporate team-building activities in Sydney exist in two categories: cooking classes everyone forgets, and trust falls everyone hates. The Modding Bench runs something different — your team sits at a workshop bench in Surry Hills and builds a working mechanical watch each over an afternoon. They walk out wearing what they built, talking about it for the rest of the year, with a souvenir nobody throws in a drawer.
Why it works for teams
- It's quiet. The room hums with focus, not forced conversation. Real connection happens when hands are busy.
- It's collaborative without being competitive. No winners. Everyone finishes with their own watch.
- It introduces creative agency. Each person picks their own dial, hands, case, bracelet. The conversation about choices is the team-building part.
- The souvenir is real. Unlike a cooking class where the meal is eaten that night, a watch is on the wrist every day for years.
- Female-led. Ash runs the workshop. Important for teams who care about diversity of voices in their off-sites.
Format
Groups of 6 to 8 people, 4 to 5 hours, weekend or by arrangement for weekday corporate bookings. Workshop is in Surry Hills, a short walk from Central Station. We can host privately — just your team in the room. We can also bring in catering, organise a dinner reservation at one of the wine bars nearby for after, or coordinate a photographer for the day.
What it costs
From $400 per person. Minimum 6 people. Includes the full build — movement, case, dial, hands, bracelet, all tools, instruction. The watch each person builds is theirs to keep. Corporate invoicing available — we'll send a proper tax invoice for the office.
What gets built
Seiko-ecosystem automatic mechanical watches — the same movement family used in current Seiko 5 watches. Robust, accurate (we test each one on a timegrapher before they leave), and the modding world's gold standard. Cases in classic, dive, pilot, and integrated-bracelet styles. Roughly 1.7 million possible combinations across the parts library, so no two team members go home with the same watch.
Best for
Engineering teams, design teams, agency teams, small leadership offsites, milestone celebrations (5-year anniversary, project completion, end-of-year). Less ideal for groups larger than 8 unless we run two consecutive sessions.
